Paris 1968: The student\u2019s revolt and the protest of the working class\n shake the foundations of various social spheres. Art and design are \nequally caught by this new dynamic. The most visible expression of this \nis the mass-production of posters since the month of May. Three students\n that work at the Atelier Populaire \u2013 the printing workshop of the \nParisian \u00c9cole des Arts D\u00e9coratifs \u2013 start a collective of graphic \ndesigners called Grapus. The founding members were Pierre Bernard, \nFran\u00e7ois Miehe, and G\u00e9rard Paris-Clavel. They were joined by Jean-Paul \nBachollet in 1974 and by Joseph Beuys\u2018 student Alex Jordan in 1976. The \ngroup\u2019s work was motivated by solidarity with the protesting workers, a \ncritical stance towards capitalism, the goals of the international peace\n movement, and the belief that art and design can contribute to social \nchange. The collective rejected commercial advertising and mainly worked\n for the Communist Party, the union CGT, for social organizations, \ncommunes, cultural institutions, and as of 1981 for governmental \nministries as well. The group broke with visual habits and created \nhighly innovative and sensual graphic designs using handwriting, blurred\n photographs, stains and various collage elements. At the beginning of \nthe 1990s, the collective dissolved but the unconventional image \nlanguage they had created continues to have an effect until today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGrapus\n \u2013 A French collective of graphic designers\u201d is part of the double \nexhibition \u201c2 x 1968\u201d conceived by the Br\u00f6han Museum on the occasion of \ncontemplating the impact of the \u201968-movement on design after 50 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
